ARTISTS is a joint European Project funded by the European Commission, a part of Key Action "City of Tomorrow and Cultural Heritage" in the Fifth Framework Programme "Energy, Environment and Sustainable Development". The project, involving nine research partners and seven city partners, was started on December 1, 2001 and will be finalised at the end of November 2004. The primary aim of this project is to develop Best Practice Guidelines, for city authorities throughout the European Union, to re-design and re-organise arterial streets in such a way as to improve the physical environment of the corridors while contributing to the implementation of more sustainable urban transport systems. The project also aims to improve the basis for decisions regarding reconstruction of arterial streets, taking into account a broad set of social, economic and environmental factors. Creating and testing innovative tools that promote the discussion of the various functions of arterial streets, physical design and traffic management options are a central objective of the research. ARTISTS objectives include:

ConferenceThe ARTISTS approach and findings were presented at the conference: From Main Roads to Mixed-Use Streets: Redesigning Traffic Arteries in Urban Areas which took place in Kensington, London on 3rd-4th November 2004.
