Civilising Cities Initiative

Sponsored by the RAC Foundation and the Department for the Environment, Transport and the Regions

The Co-ordinating Unit for the Civilising Cities Initiative was established at TSG in October 1999, with funding from the RAC Foundation for Motoring and the DETR. In conjunction with participating local authorities, it aims to practically demonstrate ways in which well-chosen packages of transport and land use measures can contribute significantly and cost-effectively to improving a range of quality of life indicators in urban areas. This will show how transport can contribute to other policy agendas, including health, personal safety, wealth creation, environmental sustainability and social inclusion.

During the Co-ordinating Unit's first full year of operation, a range of pilot projects has been established in various regions of the county, and in different types, sizes and parts of urban areas. In addition, an assessment framework for evaluating quality of life has been developed and during the next two years the Unit will be applying the framework to monitor the effects of the pilot projects. At end of the demonstration phase, TSG plans to publish guidance on the types of measures that have been more successful and advice on monitoring the contribution of transport to quality of life.
