Transport and Social Exclusion: Evaluating the Cost Effectiveness of different Transport Measures in improving access to Employment and Job Retention

Contacts: Sophie Tyler and Karen Lucas

The Federation Internationale d'Automobile (FIA) Foundation has funded a two- phased study to facilitate a comparative analysis of transport and social exclusion across the G7 countries. Phase I and II of the research are now completed. The Phase I report Transport and Social Exclusion: a survey of the Group of Seven Nations provides an overview of the position of each G7 country based on reviews of available published and grey literature. The report can be ordered from: http://www.fiafoundation.com/bookstore/

Phase II of the research concentrated on the three countries that demonstrated the most progress in terms of the practical delivery of transport projects specifically aimed at improving accessibility for socially excluded groups in the Phase I study, namely France the UK and the US. The main aim of the Phase II study was to assess the impact and cost effectiveness of schemes to improve access to employment for job seekers. Five case studies demonstrating a range of approaches have been selected in each country. A summary report and supporting technical documents will be made available on the FIA Foundation website later this year.
